White House Executive Order on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility in the Federal Workplace

President Biden has recognized that the Federal Government, “As the Nation’s largest employer, … must be a model for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, where all employees are treated with dignity and respect.” This statement, included in his Executive Order on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility in the Federal Workforce, affirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the ability to recruit, hire and advance a workforce reflecting the diverse nature of the American people. To achieve these goals, the government must provide appropriate resources and opportunities. Accessibility is defined in terms of the construction and design of physical space and accommodations as well as reducing “attitudinal barriers to equitable opportunities…” The Executive Order calls for a “Government-Wide Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Initiative and Strategic Plan” to advance the process.
