Virtual Technology and Culture Workshops for People Who are Blind or Have Low Vision

The Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library of The New York Public Library (NYPL) offers free, interactive virtual workshops on an ongoing basis on technology and other topics for “beginners and seasoned users.” Participants for all workshops may join using Zoom via computer, smartphone, or tablet or dial in by phone. Following are a few of those coming up:

Exploring NVDA: A Twelve-Week Workshop begins on April 3, 2024 and continues on Wednesdays through June 19, 2024 from 5 to 7 pm ET. This series is for individuals who know how to type but need experience with the free NVDA screen reader for Windows. Sessions will cover setting up and customizing NVDA, accessing help, editing text, managing files, and more. Voiceover for Mac: A Twelve-Week Workshop debuts on April 3, 2024 and continues on Wednesdays through June 19, 2024 from 4 to 6 pm ET. These sessions are for those who can type but need experience with the voiceover screen reader for MAC. Workshops will cover setting up and customizing Voiceover, accessing help, editing text, managing files, and more. Tools and Techniques for Accessible Cooking will take place on April 11, 2024 from 5 to 6:30 pm ET. Participants will “explore tech tools for cooking with accessibility in mind,” such as recipe sites, timers, talking scales and thermometers, and more. Intro to Microsoft Excel with Accessibility in Mind will be held on April 16, 2024 from 1:30 to 3:30 pm ET. During this program, participants will find out how to enter, edit, explore, and organize data, use simple formulas, and more, using a screen reader of their choice.
