“Accessibility is essential to create high-quality apps, websites, and other digital content – and to not exclude people from using your products and services.” A free online course, the “Introduction to Web Accessibility,” gives participants the foundation to make digital technology accessible for people with disabilities while meeting international standards and providing “a better user experience for everyone.” The self-paced syllabus is designed for developers, content authors, project managers, students, educators and other professionals, people with disabilities, and other technical and non-technical users. Participants have the option to focus on topics of greatest interest, such as coding, designing, advocating, and checking web pages for accessibility. The course encompasses principles from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Accessibility Initiative’s (WAI) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). It is designed to take approximately 16 to 20 hours to complete, including four weeks of four to five hours each week, although it can be done in a longer or shorter period of time. The sessions will be available free of charge on the edX online platform through at least December 2024. (Users can create an edX account free of charge.) Those participating who would like a “Verified Certificate” to demonstrate successful course completion can receive this for $99.
