Accessible At-Home COVID-19 Tests Available at No Cost

As COVID-19 continues to be a health threat, at-home tests have been made available once again through a partnership between the U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response and the U.S. Postal Service. One of the more accessible options for people who are blind or have low vision is the Orasure InteliSwab test. Although none of the tests on the market are fully accessible since all must be read visually, some have features making them more accessible than others. The Orasure test has been deemed the most accessible of the options available, based on input from people who have low vision and the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), along with individuals with low manual dexterity. It is considered more accessible for a number of reasons, including the facts that its parts can be identified by feel and that no drops need to be counted visually. HHS has also worked with Orasure to make test instructions accessible to blind users, using alt text that can be read with screen readers and having descriptive audio for their instructional video. To order the tests, visit the special web page within COVIDtests.gov or call 1-800-232-0233, the CDC Information Line, and then follow the prompts to select language and then choose number eight for the more accessible tests. For additional information, read the Administration for Community Living (ACL) webpage detailing how to Order free at-home COVID-19 tests.
