On November 14, 2024 from 1 to 2 pm ET, Music: How it Can Enrich Your Child’s Life as a Visually Impaired Youth will feature a discussion with Richard Thai from The Filomen D’Agostino Greenberg Music School. He will speak about their music program, designed specifically to meet the needs of children with visual impairment, with classes offered remotely and in-person in New York City. Nancy Doyle, a NY State Certified Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) who works with children who are blind and visually impaired at Lighthouse Guild, will speak as well. On November 14, 2024 from 6 to 7 pm ET, MacTel Type 2: A Community Forum for Sharing Knowledge and Support will provide an opportunity for individuals who have been diagnosed with Macular Telangiectasia Type 2 (MacTel), as well as family members, to learn about this retinal disease, how it is managed, the patient experience, and resources available to those living with it. MacTel, a rare eye disease, affects the macula, the part of the retina that is responsible for “sharp, straight-ahead vision.” Type 2 usually affects both eyes to some degree. Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapists (CVRT) Susan Dalton and Jennifer Ottowitz will highlight training considerations and adaptations, as well as sample lesson plans, for people who are blind or have low vision.
