“Basics of Blindness and Low Vision,” an introductory course for individuals who are new to the field of blindness and low vision offered free of charge, provides “foundational information on critical matters within this multidisciplinary field.” Developed by the National Research and Training Center on Blindness and Low Vision (NRTC) at Mississippi State University, the course helps to orient professionals and paraprofessionals to the principles and basics needed to function effectively in providing services to people who are blind or have low vision. The recently updated curriculum includes descriptions of parts of the eye, common eye conditions, and the impact of vision loss on daily functioning. It also provides information on how to interact with individuals with vision loss; the professionals involved in vision rehabilitation; strategies and technology used by people with vision loss; and organizations providing resources and services. Continuing education credit is available for those taking the course, which is part of NRTC’s Older Individuals who are Blind Technical Assistance Center (OIB-TAC).
