As the summer season unfolds, outdoor gatherings and other leisure time activities will head into high gear. Some recommendations for preparing, attending, and socializing at these events can add to the enjoyment of the festivities. This week’s Bulletin opens the season with some ideas shared by APH ConnectCenter:
– Receiving an invitation/planning: Whether or not the person extending the invitation knows that you have vision loss or use a white cane, ask what is on the menu, what guests can bring, and plans about seating, how many are attending, etc.
– Attending the event: “It’s completely acceptable to ask for help when you arrive…” You might want to ask for help with, for example, describing the environment (who is there, where is the food, restrooms, etc.); finding a place to sit; finding out what foods are being offered, to name a few suggestions.
– Engaging in Socializing/Conversations: Although “navigating social settings can feel scary when you’re adjusting to blindness or low vision…with some extra planning, socializing is so much fun!” Ask the host who is attending, so you can plan to connect with others at the gathering. For cane users, it can be helpful to keep your cane visible. It advises others that “don’t see well,” and they may be more inclined to approach you and begin a conversation.
