Dedicated to Improving the Lives of Blind and Visually Impaired People

RDPFS Awards Grant to Hadley: Workshops to Support the Microsoft Seeing AI App

Nearly three-quarters of adults who are blind or visually impaired own smartphones, which are becoming vital tools for independence, particularly when coupled with accessibility apps like Microsoft Seeing AI. This app leverages AI (Artificial Intelligence) to assist users in navigating their surroundings with more confidence in real time. By reading text, identifying objects and currency, and describing people’s physical characteristics, the app fosters independence, minimizing reliance on others, at home, at work, and in social settings. RDPFS funding will support the development and implementation by Hadley of 16 instructional workshops for users of both Apple and Android devices. Sessions will be introduced over a ten-month period to current and potential Hadley learners. Over the past four years, Hadley has employed a proven, highly effective process to develop and provide online workshops free of charge to adults with vision loss. The new funding will support marketing efforts as well to ensure that this initiative reaches the maximum number of individuals who can benefit from its transformative technology. It will also help Hadley continue to provide and update these offerings as new versions of Seeing AI are released.
