Nominations are now open for the 2024 Bonnie Strickland Champion for Children’s Vision Award. The National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness has announced that nominations will be accepted until July 1, 2024. This recognition honors an individual or group making significant contributions to “improve public health approaches for children’s vision and eye health at the state or national level…and reduce disparities” in ways that are sustainable and replicable. Nominees need to demonstrate an impact in areas of public health that support children’s vision, such as: engaging and collaborating with key stakeholders, including families and diverse racial/ethnic/geographic and socio-economic levels; training and education; public awareness; accountability; service delivery; “making the connection between vision and overall health;” and early childhood development and learning, to name a few. The Award will be presented during the National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health Annual Meeting on September 12, 2024. This honor was established to recognize Bonnie Strickland’s “groundbreaking work to establish a comprehensive system for children’s vision in the United States.” Strickland served as Director of the Division of Services for Children with Special Health Needs, Maternal and Child Health Bureau until her retirement in 2014.
