The National Federation of the Blind Braille Enrichment for Literacy and Learning® (NFB BELL) Academy, a nationwide summer program, prepares children, ages four through twelve years, who are blind or have low vision to “grow into confident and independent blind people who live the lives they want.” This summer, programs are being offered in person at locations in many areas across the U.S. Registration is available either at no cost or for a fee that varies from a suggested donation of $5 to $50 to approximately $150 (or up to $175 for residential students), depending on the location. The program is designed for children who need additional braille and nonvisual skills instruction, would enjoy connecting with other children who are blind or have low vision, and would like the opportunity to learn from role models who are blind. Activities include braille crafts, games, instruction in independent living skills, enjoying field trips, and more. NFB Bell Academy programs are offered as a day program or in a residential setting, depending on the location. Day programs run primarily from Monday through Friday for two weeks; residential programs generally run for one week. The first summer programming begins at the end of May, with other sessions beginning in June, July, or August.
