More than 61,000 people in Philadelphia live with vision difficulties and impairments. Nearly 30 percent of these individuals are ages 64 and older. VisionLink seeks to improve independence and quality of life for older adults who are blind or have low vision by providing educational awareness, adaptive technology, and access to resources through partnerships with other service organizations. Up until now, most of their offerings have been provided remotely through online and phone platforms. The demand and usage of services are growing significantly. To meet increased needs, Vision Link approached RDPFS to support the opening of a dedicated low vision direct services center in Center City, Philadelphia. The site will include hands-on training, onsite access to resources, and the provision of low vision equipment. RDPFS funding will be used in developing and implementing the curriculum, hiring professionals to support resource development, conduct support groups, and provide ongoing support to clients. This area of Philadelphia has been chosen because it has the highest population of individuals ages 64 and older with vision loss living in low-income communities. Outreach and educational awareness efforts will be instituted to ensure that those who can benefit from vision rehabilitation can access them.
