National Rehabilitation Counselors Appreciation Day, on March 22, 2024, serves to recognize the work and dedication of rehabilitation counselors throughout the year. Rehabilitation counselors, also known as vocational rehabilitation counselors, play a vital role in helping people with vision loss and other disabilities to attain their goals, personally and professionally. Vocational rehabilitation counselors work with individuals who are blind or have low vision to maintain their careers or return to or secure employment. The first step in the process “is an assessment conducted by a trained Vocational Rehabilitation counselor.” This professional works with the client to “explore goals, skills, and abilities to help determine how vision loss affects the client’s existing or desired position.” Following this, a personalized Vocational Rehabilitation Plan is developed to determine specific services and modalities needed to achieve the individual’s goals.
