The American Council of the Blind (ACB) has announced the individuals and organizations honored at the 2023 Audio Description (AD) Awards Gala that took place on November 14, 2023. First held in 2021, the Awards Gala recognizes “achievement in audio description in entertainment and educational media.” The event featured celebrity guests, film clips, and several award categories. Guests from the arts, entertainment, and sports worlds joined to celebrate accessible media, books, and video games. The 11 award winners were: Jim Stovall, writer and advocate for people who are blind – AD Visionary; Netflix – AD Game Changer: Innovation; Naughty Dog/Sony – AD Game Changer: Gaming; Imagination Storybooks: Education; Hallmark Media – AD Game Changer: Popular Entertainment; Paramount – AD Game Changer: 100% Access; Warner Bros. Discovery – Outstanding Achievement: Live Events; Semillitas – Outstanding Achievement: Spanish Media (USA); BBC iPlayer – Outstanding Achievement: International Media; “Wednesday” (Netflix/IDC) – People’s Choice Award (Series); and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (A24/Deluxe U.S.) – People’s Choice Award (Film). The Awards Gala was hosted by Marilee Talkington, actor, writer, and director who is legally blind, and Conchita Hernandez Legorreta, a disability rights activist who is also blind. It was broadcast with audio description as well as captions and in Spanish.
